Gum Disease Treatment Bristol
Here at Queen Square Dental Clinic, preventing dental disease is a fundamental part of our work. We aim to help you achieve and maintain optimal dental health through regular visits with our hygienists. We have a preventative dental team and a consultant periodontist, who is an expert in treating more complex gum problems.
There are two main types of gum disease:
The biggest cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. When brushing and flossing is not carried out properly, plaque is allowed to build up along the gum line, resulting in gum infection and inflammation. This condition is called gingivitis and almost all adults will suffer from this to some degree throughout their lives. One of the earliest signs is bleeding when you brush your teeth, but bleeding gums treatment is available.
If gum disease is left untreated, it can develop into a more severe condition known as periodontal disease, which is the primary cause of tooth loss in adults. With periodontal disease, the bacterial infection progresses to the deeper supporting tissues of the teeth, known as the periodontal tissues. This includes the bone surrounding the teeth. As the disease progresses, the bone supporting the teeth diminishes. This causes loosening of the teeth and abscesses to form and eventually, teeth can fall out.
Smoking and Oral Health
Smokers are far more likely to suffer with more severe gum problems. Smoking causes a lack of oxygen in the bloodstream and this has an adverse effect on the healing process. This means infections in the gums are slow to heal.
If you feel you’re having problems with any of the above conditions or are concerned about gum disease, please contact Queen Square Dental Clinic for a consultation with our periodontist. We provide treatment for gingivitis and periodontitis, as well as other forms of gum disease treatment.
